That heading should be "Japanese Caves", not "Coves". These caves/tunnels were excavated by the Japanese Engineering Unit, with much enlisted assistance. They were preparing for the American invasion, which took place beginning 21 July 1944, when the Marines stormed the beaches. The caves/tunnels are very accessible off San Ramon Street in Agana.
